Film Description
Winning an Oscar for Art Direction, The Robe was the first film to be released in Cinemascope (The first film shot in CinemaScope was How to Marry a Millionaire, which was released a couple of months after The Robe). Richard Burton plays a Roman centurion charged with overseeing the crucifixion, but when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed.
At first insensitive to the beliefs of the new Christian church, Marcellus's possession of the robe soon begins to have a profound effect upon both him and his childhood sweetheart Diana (Jean Simmons). Meanwhile, Demetrius (Victor Mature), Marcellus's slave, is planning to leave and serve a higher master.
