I enjoyed this beautiful but distressing film. The two lead actresses in this are fantastic especially Hilary Swank. You really believe that she could be a boy, you know what is going to happen but I somehow hoped for a happy ending. It shows how prejudiced people are but how wonderful love is.

`Does Lana know Brandon is a girl? She knows, yet she doesn't know, because she doesn't want to know.' (Roger Ebert). I agree with Ebert. This is a great film, not because it is about a transsexual, a lesbian, a cross-dresser or any other politically correct cliche of sexual identity, but because it is about a girl who thinks of herself as a boy. This `sad song about a free spirit' (Ebert) is also a utopian protest against the psychotic sexism and homophobia of average American manhood. And yes, it did really happen, in rural Nebraska. Both Chloe Sevigny (Lana) and Hilary Swank (Brandon) are stunning in this portrayal of the scrambled mess that makes up American social, family and sexual relations. The desire for something else ends up in the most horrifying violence. Welcome to the USA. < less
