The silent Impressionists and such Surrealists as René Clair and Poetic Realists like Jean Vigo, Marcel Carné and Jean Renoir influenced film-makers worldwide. But the biggest impact was caused by the nouvelle vague that saw young auteurs François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle challenge the conventions of screen storytelling. Fifty years on, Eric Rohmer, Jacques Rivette and Claude Chabrol remain active alongside such 70s successors as Bertrand Tavernier and style chameleons like Luc Besson and François Ozon. < show less
