Aside from (perhaps) those nice chaps over at Aardman Animation, the most interesting and influential stop-motion animation is currently being conducted by Stephen and Timothy Quay (themselves better known as the Brothers Quay). Eschewing (for the most part) spoken dialogue and (more often than not) incorporating partially disassembled dolls in some way, their films – two to date, The Piano Tuner of Earthquakes and Instituta Benjamenta or This Dream People Call Life – and shorts have drawn praise from the likes of Terry Gilliam who said their short, Street of Crocodiles, was among the ten best animations he’d ever seen.
