One of the great comic icons of French cinema, Jacques Tati invented and perfected a new form of film. He was an auteur with an extraordinary ability to make astute observations without offending or detracting from the overall entertainment value of his work. His work often made comparisons between adults and children and poked fun at the bourgeoisie and technological advancement.

However Tati's great talent was constrained by financial difficulties and an audience at home who were not yet ready for his innovative style. His legacy consists of only half a dozen full length films and a few short films. Tati was among the very first French directors to shoot in colour and he broke new ground in his use of non-professional actors. Tati skilfully integrated background sound, music and images to produce a cinematic experience like nothing which had come before. < show less
