An Introduction Often topping contemporary public polls for the greatest director, Scorsese's films appeal to both casual cinema-goes and film buffs alike. His gangster pictures such as Mean Streets and Goodfellas bear favorable comparison to the Godfather films, and his collaborations with Robert De Niro are invariably classics. He is often criticised for his weaknesses directing women, a nonsense when one considers the superb work he has coaxed out of Ellen Burstyn (who won an Oscar for her work with Scorsese), Sharon Stone, Lorraine Bracco and Cathy Moriarty.
