Like with many of the leading lights of the Italian neo-realist school, Roberto Rosselini came from a predominantly bourgeois background (his father, for example, arranged for the first cinema in Rome to be built), with possibly helped shape his sympathetic eye in early films such as Paisa and Germania anno zero. Despite causing a huge scandal when he took up with the actress Ingrid Bergman on the set of Stromboli, his films were not commercially succesful in his lifetime, although Godard and Truffaut, among others, cite him as a huge influence on the French New Wave.
