Although still largely known for his Lovers of the Arctic Circle – a film that had critics the world over announcing him as ‘the new Krzysztof Kieslowski’ – Julio Medem is the kind of donkey that refuses to have a tail pinned anywhere near it. Pretty much from his debut Vacas (‘Cows’), Medem has established a pattern of right-turns, always following his muse but rarely in the direction anyone would expect. His most recent movie, La Pelota Vasca (‘The Basque Ball’) is a case in point: a documentary about political problems in the Basque region of Spain.
