An Introduction There's little excitement to compare with settling down with one of Fritz Lang's cracking spy thrillers - Dr. Mabuse, Spione - from the 1920s. They spring to life off the screen, careering from one drama to another, and resemble graphic novels come to life more than anything else. Of course, Lang's German UFA productions form only the first part of his career and after going to Hollywood produced some fine films noir, such as Scarlet Street and The Big Heat. However, it's mostly for his early work that he is celebrated, including of course, one of the most influential films about a dystopian society ever made, Metropolis, and his chilling early sound picture, M, which stars Peter Lorre as a child-killer.
