Buyer's Guide

An Introduction

A unique voice in cinema, Herzog's arduous experiences in making films are inseparable from the films themselves. These experiences include dragging a steamship over a mountain in Peru (Fitzcarraldo) and hynotising an entire cast (Heart of Glass). Behind these exploits however lies one of Herzog's principles that filmmaking should be a physical and challenging act and that a director should not remain isolated behind a camera. In Herzog's world it is only after stripping away all security and safety nets that you may arrive at the truth of appearances. A number of fraught but productive collaborations with Klaus Kinski resulted in some of Herzog's most successful films such as - Aguirre, Wrath of God (1972), and Nosferatu. (1978).
