If you were to compile a list of ‘the greats’ – and found that the list you had made was too long, such that you then had to compile a list that was, in effect, ‘the greats of the greats’, Howard Hawks (if you had anything about you whatsoever) would be somewhere near the top. Whether it’s ‘culturally significant’ gangster movies like the original (and still the best) Scarface, all-time classic screwball comedies a la His Girl Friday and Bringing Up Baby or genius noir like The Big Sleep – his influence is so enormous it can be seen in just about any film that calls itself a thriller or a comedy.
