One of the key directors of the Czech New Wave Miloš Forman retained international recognition by decamping to America at the end of sixties where he’s been making films ever since.

Kicking off the new Czech cinema with his influential short Audition (later compiled into a feature) Foreman combined breezy characterisation with humour and biting social satire, as seen in A Blonde in Love and the Fireman’s Ball.

Moving to America after the Soviet clampdown in 1968 Forman soon made one of the greatest films of the 1970s - One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest - starring Jack Nicholson which won five Oscars. Later seminal Hollywood films included Amadeus, from the Peter Shaffer play and the much neglected Valmont.

Today Forman remains the world’s most prominent Eastern European director. < show less
