Over a career spanning six decades, Michelangelo Antonioni was known for his profound explorations of modern alienation and the malleability of identity in films such as L'Avventura, L'Eclisse, Blow-Up and The Passenger. A consistently innovative and thoughtful filmmaker, his films are of a surpassing beauty, and he received an honorary Oscar in 1995 'in recognition of his place as one of the cinema's master visual stylists'.

Although he found his directorial feet working alongside Roberto Rosselini producing short works of sympathetic neo-realism, he came into his own when his work engaged with the middle classes. International success greeted his more radical and daring work in the sixties and that drove Antonioni on to still greater heights.
