Arch exponent of the Japanese avant-garde, Hiroshi Teshigahara’s collaborations with cult author Kobo Abe and musician Toro Takemitsu produced films that were both celebrated critically (in 1964, his Woman of the Dunes scooped both an Academy Award nomination and a Special Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival) and commercially, in his native Japan and abroad. Perhaps best thought of as a contemporary of Kaneto Shindo (whose Onibaba has much in common with Woman of the Dunes), Teshigahara is like a visual poet working in the medium of film.
