Danish Director Carl Theodor Dreyer is widely renowned as one of the greatest films directors in cinema history despite a (relatively) low cinematic output (itself attributed to his idiosyncratic shooting style and stubborn devotion to his art). Although The Passion of Joan Arc is regarded as his ‘classic’ (both his first classic and also the one film all self-respecting film-buffs should check out), Vampyr, Ordet and Gertrud all helped to establish a unique style of cinema whose influence can be seen today in the works of Lars von Triers (amongst others).
