The Coen Brothers have two main influences: you want to see where the hard-edged noir element of their work comes from, check out Howard Hawks; you want to see where they get their wordy, character-driven comedy from, you check out Preston Sturges. In fact, check out Preston Sturges irrespective of what you think about the Coens. This is as classy as comedy gets and Preston Sturges (whose work was simply impossible to get, for years!) is a director as worthy of re-evaluation as you can get.
