He is responsible for two of the film noir era's most definitive titles, Double Indemnity and Sunset Boulevard, and was a brilliant director of comedy. Tight plots and memorable dialogue characterised his work as he felt the flamboyant directorial style of contemporaries such as Hitchcock distracted from the narrative – wherever possible he would shoot in black and white.
