Anthony Mann is, these days, best remembered for a brace of westerns that turned the genre on its head (a feat helped in no small part by James Stewart, himself busy transforming the way he was perceived by the viewing public, playing sweaty, dangerous outlaw types, wildly out of his comfort zone). Bend of the River, Winchester ’73, The Man From Laramie, The Naked Spur and The Far Country are all essential and hugely influential (you can see Mann’s influence on Peckinpah and Tarantino to name but two). The westerns are not the be-all and end-all of Mann, though. You want a full picture you need to check out his brace of classic noirs too: Desperate, Railroaded, T-Men, He Walked by Night and Raw Deal. Nicholas Ray, eat your heart out!
