The great cinephile François Truffaut once opined that there was 'a certain incompatibility' between Britain and cinema. Evidently, François Truffaut had not seen many British films. At their best, British films are dazzling cinema. From the high fantasy of Powell and Pressburger to the raw humanity of Ken Loach, via the polite subversion of the Ealing comedies, British films are alive with imagination, wit and passion.
Of course, poor François Truffaut didn't have DVD to help him out. Those of us who do can chose from a bewildering selection – classics like The Third Man or rediscovered treasure like It Happened Here. Britain's film heritage is rich and vital: it deserves to be celebrated loudly. < show less
