Walt Disney casts a long shadow in the world of animation – his reinterpretation of classic fairy tales with colourful characters and catchy songs have helped shape the genre, and attracted many (less successful) imitators. Given Disney Studios’ mainstream ubiquity, it’s easy to forget that Walt was, at heart, an innovator – and masterpieces such as Fantasia and Sleeping Beauty remain artistic landmarks.
